Build a frozen dungeon encounter setup with ice cave terrain tiles, LED accents, and a clear centerpiece. Follow eight steps from layout to final frozen detail.

Quick answer

Build a frozen ice catacomb in eight steps: establish a clear centerpiece, lay a frozen floor, add ice walls and elevation, thread LED light, place hazards, detail with ice and bone, then run a final table check. Use translucent ice pieces and LED accents to carry the frozen mood, and keep a walkable path so the encounter plays as well as it looks.

What makes a frozen catacomb read as frozen

A frozen catacomb is not just a cave with blue paint. It is a burial space that has been overtaken by ice, so the build needs two signals at once: architecture that says tomb, and surfaces that say deep cold. That combination is what separates a frozen dungeon encounter setup from a generic winter cave.

You can hit both signals with a small palette. Translucent ice walls and ice terrain trays give the cold read, while columns, alcoves, and a raised shrine or obelisk give the tomb read. The strongest layouts put one glowing or elevated focal point where players can see it from the table edge, then let the ice spread outward from it.

Plan the frozen footprint before you place a single tile

Sketch the encounter on paper first. Mark the entry point, the objective, and at least two routes between them. A frozen catacomb works best when the ice is an obstacle as well as a backdrop, so leave a narrow safe path and let the surrounding floor be dangerous or blocked.

Decide where the light will come from before you build. If your centerpiece is an LED piece, its glow should fall on the objective, not into a corner. This one decision shapes the whole ice themed dungeon layout, because players will naturally move toward whatever is lit.

Eight steps to build the encounter

  1. 1. Establish the centerpiece first: Place your focal piece, such as the crystal obelisk on its stone outcropping or an LED Icy Runic Column, and build everything else around it. Put it where it is visible from the players' side of the table. Checkpoint: if you cannot see the centerpiece from the table edge, move it before adding anything else.
  2. 2. Lay the frozen floor: Set your base tiles and ice terrain trays, leaving a deliberate walkable path from the entry to the centerpiece. Ice Terrain Trays create the dangerous ice sheets that the Ice Bridge is designed to cross. Common mistake: covering the whole footprint in ice, which leaves players no safe route and stalls the encounter.
  3. 3. Add walls and elevation: Build up the perimeter with ice walls and raise the centerpiece on a stone outcropping or platform. Height separates the objective from the floor and gives ranged characters something to use. Checkpoint: make sure every raised area has at least one route up, or treat it as intentionally unreachable.
  4. 4. Install the LED light: Place your LED pieces and route the cables or batteries before you add loose detail. Light should fall on the objective or on a specific alcove, not evenly across the whole build. Common mistake: adding LED pieces last, when the wiring no longer fits under the terrain.
  5. 5. Cut in the alcoves and dead ends: Set curved alcoves into the walls to create shadowy recesses and dead ends. Use their modular LED sockets for a cold glow that reads as something sealed inside the wall. Checkpoint: each alcove should either hide something, threaten something, or slow the players down. If it does none of those, cut it.
  6. 6. Place the hazards and the crossing: Position the Ice Bridge over the ice sheets and decide what happens if a character falls or is pushed off. Frozen floors, brittle edges, and collapsing ice all work better when the terrain shows exactly where the danger is. Common mistake: treating the bridge as decoration. If it does not change how players move, it is not doing its job.
  7. 7. Detail with ice, bone, and bodies: Add frozen bodies, bones, and small ice formations last, once the structure is set. Scatter them along the walls and inside the alcoves rather than in the middle of the walkable path. Checkpoint: detail should suggest what happened here, not block movement or hide the objective.

Products that fit this build

  • Encounter 12 - Ice Catacomb (Unpainted): Encounter 12 - Ice Catacomb (Unpainted) is the 12th encounter of Caverns Deep and has 125 pieces, including Ice Painted Cavern pieces, translucent Ice Walls, an Ice Bridge to cross the dangerous ice sheets from the Ice Terrain Trays, and an LED Icy Runic Column. This is a complete frozen encounter in one box, so it removes most of the guesswork about which ice pieces work together. The Ice Bridge and Ice Terrain Trays also let you build a genuine crossing hazard instead of a flat room.
  • LED Alcoves (Unpainted): LED Alcoves (Unpainted) are curved alcoves with modular LED sockets for creating shadowy recesses, decorative nooks, and dead ends. Alcoves give a catacomb its burial niches and let you place light exactly where you want a recess to read as occupied or empty. Note that this set is retired once sold out and replaced by Dungeon LED Alcoves - Vaulted, so plan around availability.
  • Encounter 15: Shrine of Sysuul (Unpainted): Encounter 15: Shrine of Sysuul (Unpainted) is built around a shattered altar and dormant forbidden gods waiting to awaken. If you want the frozen catacomb to end at a ritual site rather than a simple exit, this gives you a ready-made altar objective to set at the far end of the ice.
